Rare woodblocks found in Nghe An province

A rare set of wooden printing blocks has been found at Thien temple, in Dien Ngoc commune, Dien Chau district, Nghe An Province.

The set includes 95 woodblocks, with each depicting the customs of the times as well as the lives of ordinary people, including some inscribed with Buddhist prayers.

The woodblocks were carved very skillfully during the Khai Dinh Dynasty (1885-1925) and are written in the Han script.

The Nghe An vestige – landscape Management Board’s Deputy-Head, Phan Van Hung, says it is the biggest ever find of woodblocks in Nghe An province and plans are being drawn up to preserve them and translate the script into Vietnamese so the public can gain an insight into this rare and valuable part of Vietnam’s traditional culture.
