Overview: Challenging Trek Nam Ha, Luang Namtha

This is a trip for those who really want a true jungle experience. The trek is within the Nam Ha National Protected Area, an ASEAN Heritage Site. The trek takes us through different villages of the Lanten, the Khmu and the Akha people who will share with us their knowledge of fauna and flora of the protected forest. They also share with us their unique culture. The forest camp would give you a special jungle experience.

Detailed itinerary: Challenging Trek Nam Ha, Luang Namtha

Day 1: Luang Namtha – Ban Don Sai Village – Khmu forest camp

Meet at your hotel at 8:00 am and drive north into the Nam Ha Protected Area. After short transfer we reach Don Sai Village where we meet our village guide and start trekking into jungle following hunting trails of the locals. Along the trails the village guide would help us to learn about plants and animals. Picnic lunch is served on the trail. At the Khmu forest camp our village guide and villagers will show us how to collect wild vegetables for dinner. We cook dinner over an open fire with Khmu hosts. After dinner we could go for wildlife spotting with the village guide. Overnight at the forest camp.

Day 2: Khmu forest camp – Akha forest camp

We wake up early for bird watching if you wish. We could help villagers to cook traditional Khmu breakfast. After breakfast we head to Akha Camp through the Nam Ha jungle. The village guides will go ahead of us to prepare a picnic lunch for us in the forest.

In the afternoon we reach Akha Camp. We would cook and have dinner with the village guide. Tonight we have another opportunity for wildlife spotting.

Day 3: Akha Camp – Ban Nam Mat May Village – Peang Ngam Village

We get up early before breakfast to go to the hunting site where our Akha guide would show us how he calls wild birds in. If we really want to see the birds, we have to act like a hunter. We return to the camp to enjoy an Akha breakfast prepared by our village guide. After breakfast, we start trekking through jungle until lunch time. Picnic lunch is served by a stream.

After lunch, we continue trekking to Ban Mat May passing rice paddy fields and then on to the village of Peang Ngam, a Black Thai village where we spend tonight in a local house.

Day 4: Peang Ngam Village – Ban Nam Lai Village

Today, we head to the heart of Nam Ha Nation Park. On the way, our village guide will share with us his knowledge of fauna and flora of the forest and also culture of his ethnic minority group. Picnic lunch in deep jungle. After lunch we hike a mountain before reaching Nam Lai village of the Akha. Tonight we stay in another forest camp near the village.

Day 5: Nam Lai Village – Ban Chaluen Sook Village

After breakfast, we hike through rice paddies and along a stream until we encounter jungle again. The village guide is sure to have more stories of the nature and culture of this area to share with you. The stream leads us to Nam Yen Waterfall where we would have lunch.

After lunch we continue trekking in the jungle until we reach the Chaluen Sook Village of the Khmu ethnic minority. Dinner and home stay in Chaluen Sook Village.

Day 6: Ban Chaluen Sook Village – Ban Nalan Village – Ban Nam Goy Village

Breakfast at the home-stay. In the morning we follow jungle trails and ascend toward mountain ridge. We may encounter villagers going to or coming from market. Picnic lunch on the way. In the afternoon we descend toward the Ban Nalan Tai Village of the Khmu ethnic minority. In order to distribute the benefit among villages, we would stay in either the lodge of Ban Nam Goy Village or Ban Nalan Tai Village (Khmu) or Ban Nam Goy Village (Lanten).

Day 7: Ban Nam Goy Village – Ban Hot Yawng Village – Luang Namtha

After breakfast, we trek along the bank of the Nam Ha River before we cross the river on bamboo raft. Continue trekking in jungle toward Ban Hot Yawng Village. Picnic lunch is prepared by the village guide. As we approaching the Ban Hot Yawng Village we pass rice paddies and would see farmer working on their paddies.

From Ban Hot Yawng Village, we will return to Luang Namtha by either motor boat or truck depending on the season. The option of returning by river is by traditional motor boat operated by villagers. If returning by truck, the road may be a bit rough and a little dusty. Back to Luang Namtha in late afternoon. Trip finishes.
